We have a mechanism inside of our brain that analyses every one of our experiences, determines what it means and then stores the results in our bank of references. The process started while we were very young and has been going on ever since.

That is the process that allows us to perform automatically most of what we do during the course of our life. That’s the process that allows us to drive a car almost automatically, to use our keyboard without having to search for the letters etc. However, that process also does a lot more.

That is the process that formed most of the beliefs that we have. It’s where most of our personal views on just about every subject under the sun were constructed. These beliefs and views are neatly tucked up in our bank of reference just waiting to spring forth when the need occurs.

The problem with that bank of references is that most of it was already formed before we were three years old. That is to say that some very important evaluations were done before we were mature enough to do it. Hard to believe but true.

By the age of three, we had definite notions about love, about relationships, about money, about people and about just every imaginable subject. At the time, they were very embryonic notions but they established the basis upon which our beliefs were eventually formed and accepted as gospel truth.

Today, years later, that bank of reference is still being used to define our reality. As we developed, learned and grew, some of those beliefs were altered to adapt to new information but the original evaluations still play an important role in our belief system.

Without that bank of references we simply could not function. It is where our automatic reflexes are stored; it is through that bank of references that we can have a normal conversation without having to analyze the course of that conversation. It’s the guiding mechanism for most of our actions however it is also were our beliefs are held.

Our beliefs are extremely important because they define our reality. As such, some of those beliefs are empowering and some are not. Some beliefs contribute positively and some are major roadblocks. Some beliefs are sources of inspiration and growth while others only contribute to difficulties and hardships.

We are the steward of our own bank of references and the overseer of our beliefs. It is for us to determine what is good and what is not; what should be kept and what should be changed.

It is to be remembered that beliefs are not cast in stone. They are simply notions that we have adopted for reasons that, in some cases, may be questionable and sometimes adopted before we were mature enough to make judicial decisions.

Some people where influenced, by the time that they were three years old, to believe that they were worthless and that they could never achieve anything worthwhile in their life. Years and years later that belief still affect and run their life in spite of tons of evidences to the contrary. That’s a real tragedy.

Beliefs are simply notions that we have accepted and notions that can be questioned and changed. Changes may not always be easy because our mind has a strong need for consistency. However, with some determination, a disempowering belief can always be replaced by a positive one. That’s how we grow, mature and become wiser and more effective.

As our Universe unfolds in front of our eyes, it creates the setting for a magnificent movie of which we are the Director and eventually the unique spectator. What we do with that movie will either be a film that we’ll enjoy, fear, admire or loathe. That film represents, “Our Reality.”

Being able to direct and create our own version of the way we see our world gives us almost god-like power. We can shape our reality in almost any way that we want and we can direct how we experience every day that is given us.

Movie directors know that different effects of a scene can be created simply by changing the angle of the camera that is recording the scene. They also know that by changing the opening of the camera’s lens they can determine what will or will not be seen on the film.

It’s a big world and an almost limitless Universe out there. It contains amazing beauty and there is ugliness. There are scenes of joy and there is suffering. We can also see great hope and some despair. We are the Director; we get to decide what we will focus on and choose how it will affect our reality.

This liberty to choose has been called the ultimate freedom. We are not stuck in a fixed reality; we get to choose it. We have the choice between literally millions of different settings to focus on. No one and no outside influence can restrict that choice. The ultimate choice is in our hands. We are the Director.

As Director, we get to choose the theme of our movie. It can be a film about adventure, it can be about saving the world, and it can be about small or huge accomplishments. It’s our film. Whatever we want to see in the film and whatever way we want it seen is available. It’s a big Universe out there and it’s all at our disposal.

There is such a thing as reality however it cannot be grasped by the human mind. The very best that we can do is to create a representation of what we perceive reality to be. We don’t know what others are thinking; we don’t really know what is in their heart and mind.

We don’t know what others believe and we don’t know how they perceive reality. We don’t know about the nature of God and we don’t even know why we do most of what we do – yet, we profess to know what reality is all about.

Even on the tangible plane, our eyes deceive us. Quantum physic says everything that we see is in actuality nothing but energy. Still, most of the time we are left unfazed; we believe that our perception of reality is real. It’s not. It’s just a perception.

It does take maturity and some soul searching to come to the evidence that we live in a world of our own making. In a world that is mostly the fruit of our imagination. Before we can accept this theory, a very wide bridge has to be crossed. We must be willing to think outside of the box and change some fundamental beliefs. Not always an easy task.

It’s not an easy task but it is one that is very liberating. Once we have come to accept that we live in a world or our own making, we also understand that we are not tied down to just one world or one reality. It is in our power to change whatever reality we are in for another one that is more pleasant and more empowering.

We are the Director who decides what we will ignore and what we will focus on. We can change the perspective from which we look at everything tangible and non-tangible. We can create our world; we can create our reality. We’ve been doing it all along; the difference is that we did not know that we had a choice. We do have that choice – so let’s make it a world of wonderment and happiness.

“Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.” – Muhammad Ali

The outer layer of the brain, called the cerebral cortex or grey matter, has grooves known as, “sulci.” That is where the seeds of success lay dormant, just waiting to be discovered and nurtured so that they can metamorphose into beautiful and shining accomplishments.

Each of those seeds contains all the genes and other elements required to fulfill one of our dream or aspiration. They lay there, awaiting the heat that only a strong desire can provide, to break out of their shell and start growing like the mighty oak tree.

We don’t have to look in far-off or exotic places to find those seeds of success. They are right there, in our brain, just waiting to be set free so that they can grow and turn the invisible into the visible and the dream into reality.

Just as is the case of a stable chemical solution that needs a catalyst to start the desired reaction, our seeds of success need an outside stimulus to start the chain reactions that will propel them to actualization. That outside stimulus can only be provided by the heat generated by an intense desire.

Desire is the incubator that will break the shell of the dormant seed and give it life. Now, different seeds have different shells. The seed of bigger dreams have thicker shells, and the thicker the shell is; the greater the desire has to be if it wants to generate enough heat to break it open.

Desire is the genitor of accomplishments. Without a strong enough desire, nothing will happen. With a strong enough desire even the seeds that contain our wildest dreams can be awaken and set on their way to making the dream come true. The big dreams need the kind of desire that is flamed by passion and commitment.

Just as the Universe is controlled by specific forces and nature unfolds through very specific laws, dreams are turned into accomplishment by following a very specific pattern. When fully understood, we see that nothing in life happens by accident. Everything follows the law of cause and effect.

Great achievements start with a dream. As the dream takes shape, the desire to see it turn into reality also grows. When under the influence strong emotions, the desire has reached the critical point of intensity, life is infused into the seed of that dream and a new reality is created.

From that moment on, the life of the holder of that dream is changed forever. It is now growing time for the project and the creator of that project. That’s another law of the Universe. No major project or achievement is possible without some personal growth and transformation. Personal growth and achievement go hand in hand. We cannot have one without the other.

Once a project is completed, the person who started it is no longer the same person. Experience has been acquired, unsuspected personal resources have been found and a new level of self-respect has been established. That, in itself, might be even more important than the objective that was accomplished.

We have, in the folds of the grey matter of the brain, success seeds that are just waiting to be released through the influence of a strong desire. We have the seeds, all that we need to do is to supply the desire and then watch our dreams turn into reality and see ourselves expand into the person that we were meant to be.

Mental Spammers. They are the ubiquitous victims. They keep on bombarding us with messages that we don’t need and don’t want to hear. The only thing that keeps them going is the ever-unfolding dramas that fill their lives. In their book, everything is black, everything is negative.

It’s never their fault. The world is dedicated to ruining their life. Not only are they negative, they are also contagious. Misery loves company so they are constantly recruiting. Nothing would please them more than to have us join their army; the United Victims of the World.

Just as we would approach a contagious patient with precautions and care, we need to treat these people with due circumspection. At best, they will rain on our parade and in the worst scenario; they’ll win us over to their side.

The human mind is like the hard disk of a computer. It will register whatever we allow to filter in. No one in his right mind would visit Internet sites known to be contaminated. The same precaution and care should be used for our mind.

It has been estimated that it takes at least seventeen positive messages to counteract the effect of a single negative one. That is something that should be considered seriously. No one is immune from negative and demoralizing influences.

To perform at the highest level, we must be in the greatest possible state of mind. Something that cannot co-exists with a mind laden with negative and gloom and doom influences. To be all that we can be, mental hygiene has to be kept at the highest possible level.

Some years ago, an experiment was conducted in the Bronx, New York. Some good and honest police officers were placed in a precinct contaminated with bad cops. In less than six months, all those stellar police officers were just as corrupt as the group that they were placed with.

We are much more susceptible to be influenced negatively then we would like to believe. That is because it is done at the level of the unconscious. The cancerous negative metastases are implanted in our brain without our being aware of it. That is why they are so insidious and so damaging.

It is a fundamental axiom that we become like those that we associate with. No friend is better than bad friends, and unless we are stuck in a jail somewhere, it’s always possible to find worthwhile people to associate with. An excellent way of doing this is by volunteering for community services. That is usually where the best of the best can be found.

Mental Spammers and drama queens are everywhere. We cannot escape them totally so, good mental hygiene is absolutely necessary. As much time should be spent every day reading or viewing uplifting material as we do on body hygiene. That is where the famous Latin quotation, “Mens sana in corpore sano.” (A healthy mind in a healthy body) gets all its significance.

High performance requires high-level maintenance. Just as no one would travel a bumpy gravel road with a high performance Ferrari, no one serious about personal achievement should take the chance of being negatively influenced by the wrong crowd.

To perform optimally we need to be in the best possible frame of mind. That can only be done by associating with people who deserve our admiration and respect. A small price to pay to be all that we can be.

The title of this article sounds like of one of those cheesy add that tells you how to build a fantastic physique by training just a few minutes a week. The good news is that you won’t have to make twelve easy payments for it and I won’t lie to you.

Seriously, if you are willing to invest just ten minutes a day toward achieving your goals using this technique, in less than a few months you’ll be amazed with the results. I know that it works because I’ve used it for over three decades.

The first thing that you need to do is to give yourself the title (and the job) of CEO for a business conglomerate who’s only mission and function is to manage your brain and see to it that it is as productive as it can possibly be.

The second thing that you need to do is to see yourself as two distinct individuals. The first is the CEO whose main function is to define where the conglomerate (which is you) is going, what its goals and objective are and the strategies to get there.

The second person is the manager who will implement the CEO’s strategies. Now it’s very important to respect the integrity of these two persons. When you’re the CEO, you think and act as a CEO and when you’re the manager you only act as a manager.

The reason for that is simple. As a CEO you may have to make demands that the manager may not be quite comfortable with. However, as manager he has no choice in the matter. He simply has to follow the boss’ orders.

At first sight, this role-playing may seem a little silly. So what? It works. That is, it works if you work it. That’s the recipe and like any recipe, if you don’t use all the ingredients the way that they should be used, the finished product will not be what it was supposed to be.

Now that the stage is set, it’s time for the nitty-gritty of the ten minutes exercise. That ten minutes daily period will be devoted to the CEO’s personality and it will consist of working on the conglomerate’s Journal.

No responsible company or organization would even dream of working without a Journal. That’s a book in which the mission of the company is defined. It’s a place where the objectives are recorded along with the strategies necessary to reach these objectives. In the case of a one-person organization that book is called a Personal Planner.

The Personal Planner consist of a small loose leafs binder with separators for the different subjects to be treated. These subjects should include: the overall mission or prime objective of the individual, a list of all the goals with the strategies to reach these goals, a “must do today” list, a list of important contacts along with pertinent info regarding these people. Other items or subjects can also be included if so desired.

Once you’ve created the two personalities (CEO and Manager) and that your Personal Planner is set up, all you have to do is to spend ten minutes a day doing the planning and deciding what should absolutely be done for that day.

The exercise is extremely simple in it’s application and will give tremendous results so long as both personalities take their function seriously and conscientiously. Running a large conglomerate or a single individual only differs in the size of the organization. The principles are the same and so should be the methodology.

Take yourself seriously, manage and conduct yourself in a professional way and you will reap outstanding results. It cannot fail. The best of luck… and see you at the top.

“Not only do you have to decide what results you are committed to, but also the kind of person that you’re committed to becoming.” – Anthony Robbins

Basically, self-actualization means working toward becoming all that we can be. It should be a process that starts at birth and last until the last curtain falls. Unfortunately, such is not always the case. Many people are so entangled in the problems of daily life that little thought or attention is given to self-actualization.

That’s a shame because self-actualization should be what life is all about. Life means growth. The moment that growth stops, stagnation and decay set in. That is true for all living organisms and it is especially true for humans. It is correctly said that some people die at age twenty-two, forget to fall down, and will only get buried past age eighty.

Self-actualization passes through three stages: learning, integrating and doing. Let’s review these three stages.

1. Learning is the first stage. Every new thing that we learn is added to our bank of reference where it can be used in the thinking process. That information serves to evaluate concepts and ideas; it can be used to make finer and more effective distinctions and is the basis for the entire conscious process.

2. The integration into the wiring of our brain of some of our knowledge has to be done in a way that it becomes an automatic reflex. That is the second stage of the self-actualizing process and it has much to do with self-control. It is evident that a person near the zenith of self-actualization will not react to situations the same way that an infant would. As we evolve and grow, we get to be more and more sophisticated in our automatic responses to situations and events.

3. The last, and probably most meaningful stage of self-actualization is the “doing” part. It is not what we know that really counts but what we do with it that really matters. It is by pushing our limits that we really grow. So long as we stay in our comfort zone, no real progress is achieve. It is when we really have to flex our intellectual muscles that growth occurs.

That is the primary reason why we should have goals and objectives. It is not reaching a goal that is the most important. What really matters is the person that we have to become to reach our objectives that really matters.

The real objective of goal setting is self-transformation, self-growth and self-actualization. The stories of people who never grasped or understood that fundamental axiom are legion. They are the tales of people who have achieved unbelievable success, acquired fame and adulation of the masses that end up destroying themselves because they are so miserable and unhappy that they can no longer stand it.

Material possessions, fame and recognition by themselves will not bring happiness. Successful living is above all a state of mind. It is found in the satisfaction that we are constantly growing and improving; in the realization that we are evolving and contributing. In the feeling that, day-by-day, we are climbing the path of self-actualization.

Once our basic physiological and emotional needs have been met, everything that we do is directed toward satisfying our need for self-actualization. Self-actualization has been called the master motive. In other words, self-actualization is the ultimate motive from which all other motives spring.

Once we’ve understood this basic fact of life, we are ready to make real progress. We are heading in the right direction. It’s not what we own that really matters; it’s whom we are that really counts.

“To live for results would be to sentence myself to continuous frustration. My only sure reward is in my actions and not from them.” – Hugh Prather

Crushed expectancies create frustration which in turn leads to crushed self-image, blows to self-worth and major damage to self-confidence. The number one cause of procrastination is the very real fear of frustration and its demoralizing effect.

Most of us have been there. We gave our best. Success seemed assured, and then the sky fell on us. Some unexpected event happened and our dream was shattered. We were left very sad, broken and we swore that it would never happen again. No more big dreams for us. We simply could not risk going through that again. Simply too painful.

The saddest part in all of that is the fact that all that pain could have been avoided by taking a slightly different approach in the pursue of our goals and objectives. That is, if we had understood that those goals and objectives are not really what we ultimately were after. What we truly want is to feel good.

If what we truly want is to feel good, maybe we should make an in-depth search into what makes us feel good. Of course, reaching an objective that we’ve been after for a long time will make us feel good. But that goal-reaching happiness usually last a relatively short period of time. Once an objective has been reached, we get used to it and we’re ready for something else.

On the other hand, there is another source of “feeling good” that is under our control and that can last as long as we are willing to put in the efforts to keep it going. That is the “feeling good” sensation that we get when we understand that we are performing at the highest level that we possibly can – that we are improving, growing and expanding as individual.

Nothing can bring sweeter and longer lasting satisfactions than victories over ourselves. It boosts self-confidence, improves the self-image, increases personal power and gives a tremendous sense of mastery over life itself. It’s an ego pleaser and a self-builder.

Victories over self do not depend on the successes achieved but on the performances given. An outstanding performance against a formidable objective that is not attained is a greater victory over self than achieving success in a lesser quest. Climbing Mount Everest only half way is a much greater success then the victory found in reaching the top of the local sky slope.

Frustration can be avoided by conducting our life in a way that we have total control over our expectations and by according only secondary importance over the factors over which we have little or no control. Vince Lombardi said, “Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is everything.” He was right…

We may not have complete control over the outcome of an undertaking but we have complete control over the dedication and efforts that we put fort. When we are mature enough to understand that, frustration is no longer an issue.

The only possible way to expand and grow is by tackling challenges and obstacles that are bigger than we are. That’s how we get bigger and stronger. It’s how we get to reach down in the debt of our soul to set free those elusive resources that we did no even know that we had.

A weight lifter who fails in an attempt to lift ten pounds more than he ever lifted before will not be frustrated. He knew before hand that failure was a real possibility but he also knew that he had to try if he wanted to grow and improve. The same principle also applies to us. We have to try and risk failure but we must also know that real growth is the result of multiple failures. Once we’ve understood that, frustration is no longer an item on our agenda.

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” – Vincent Lombardi

We love heroes. We love to see these people who are totally committed to a cause and who are willing to pay the price that it takes to win and achieve. We tend to believe that they are special; that they were born with special talents and the gift of greatness. Heroes are not born; they are made.

When we read the story of these so-called exceptional people, we find out that they are actually ordinary people with exceptional drive. Each and every one of them had an exceptional desire to achieve and to win. They had an unquenchable thirst to live their life to the fullest. That’s how they became what they are. Heroes.

How did that come about? What ignited that unstoppable need for achievement? The answer to that question is relatively simple. They too had their heroes. People that they admired and wanted to emulate and imitate. They too wanted the love and admiration that were given to those heroes.

They wanted that feeling of living life to the fullest; to be all that they could be. Not an unusual feeling but one that was coupled with an important catalyst that made all the difference in the world. They truly believed that if they worked hard enough they could achieve their goal. That made all the difference.

It is said that, certainty is the winner’s edge. Certainty is the spark that can turn the invisible into the visible and dream into reality. A sense of certainty is the key that will unlock and set free all of a person’s potential, motivation and determination. Nothing can stop a person who has a burning desire to achieve a specific goal and knows with certainty that the objective is within reach.

We were all born with the seed of greatness within us. We all have talents and abilities that could contribute to make this world a better place for all. This seed lies dormant, just waiting to be discovered, nurtured and exploited. It is there and we can find it if we believe that we can.

One of the reasons that this seed may be hard to find is the fact that it is buried under the debris of frustrations. At one time, we had dreams. We worked to make these dreams come true and failed. So we decided that it was futile to try. We had failed before and no doubts we would fail again. So, why risk another heartache? That’s a fatal mindset. It’s a dream killer and a life waster.

The game is not over until the final curtain falls. What we saw as past failures were actually experiences that we had to go through to prepare us for the ultimate sprint to the brass ring. No one ever makes it on the first try. Sometimes it takes five, ten and maybe more trial runs before we finally make it. Winning is not a matter of special talent or golden opportunities. It’s a matter of courage and perseverance.

Each of us was placed on Planet Earth for a unique and special reason. Deep down in our heart we know what that mission is. At one point in our life, we had a vision of what we could become and what we could achieve is we ever decided to be all that we could be. For many of us, that dream is still there and just begging to be rekindled and turned into reality.

It is never too late to choose the efforts of excellence over the pains of regret. It is never too late to finally decide to be all that we can be and become the hero that we were meant to be while keeping in mind that heroes don’t always win but they always give their best; that’s what makes them heroes.

“In life you need either inspiration or desperation.” – Anthony Robbins

Your ship is sailing. Either you grab the elm and steer it where you want it to go or someone else will do it for you. We are all on a grand voyage called life. It can be a fantastic odyssey of epic proportion or it can be a desperate struggle for survival. We get to decide which course we will take.

That’s a decision that we are very fortunate to be able to make. Anyone who can read these lines has tools, resources and opportunities that were not available just a few decades ago and that are still unheard off in some countries. We are blessed beyond beliefs.

With the click of a mouse, we have access to all the information that we may want or need. With another click of the mouse, we can communicate instantly through all four corners of the globe. That same mouse allows us to create in a few instants what would have taken weeks and maybe months just a few decades ago.

We live in countries where health cares are available to everyone. We are all assured that our basic necessities will be taken care off. Even our most modest dwelling is more comfortable than the sprawling mansions of just a century ago. We are twice blessed.

That is, we are twice blessed if we chose to believe that we are. We are twice blessed if we chose to take advantage of all the opportunities that are available. We are twice blessed if we decide where we want to go; plan a course to get there then find within ourselves the resolve to execute that plan.

We are sitting at a banquet table and all that is required to feast on that full course meal is the courage to stand up and claim our legitimate birthright. Everything that is needed for a successful life is at our disposal. It’s right there, in front of our eyes. Just waiting to be discovered and used.

We live in a world of our own creation. We get to decide what things and events mean for us. Where a man will see a simple acorn, another one will see a budding, and soon to be, mighty oak tree shaped into exquisite furniture. What is garbage in the eye of a person is valuable recycling material in the views of another.

If we don’t choose to consciously design and implement the life of our choice, we are left with the robotic option. That is, just like a robot, being guided and at the mercy of outside influences. Not much of a life. More like a life’s sentence than the great gift that it was meant to be.

There are times when life does not unfold as we would like. When that happens, it can create frustration or be seen as a learning experience. That will depend whether a person is pro-actively creating a life or just visiting Planet Earth as a casual tourist hoping that the powers that be will attend to his every desires and wishes.

Like never seen before, we are surrounded with resources and opportunities just waiting for us to use them to create the life that we want. It’s all there, up for grabs by anyone who decides to actively take control of his life and turn it into the masterpiece that it was meant to be. However, no one will chew our food for us.

We are the one who must take responsibility for our life. We are the one who must design it and implement that design. It’s our ship. Either we steer it and bring it to the port of our choice or we can let the winds and the tides drag it until it crashes on some rocky shores.

“If you raise your standards but don’t really believe you can meet them, you’ve already sabotaged yourself. Our beliefs are like unquestioned commands, telling us how things are, what’s possible and what’s impossible. – Anthony Robbins

It is said that if we redistributed equally among the population all the money available in the world, in less than five years, almost everyone would be financially right back where they were before. Earning money is not all that hard but believing that we deserve that money certainly is. It may sound unbelievable but it’s the truth.

Time and time again, we see people enjoying a certain degree of success, and then all of a sudden, these people will do something unbelievable stupid and loose it all. Instead of enjoying success, these people felt more and more uncomfortable as their affluence grew. Why is that?

The answer to that question is simple. We don’t feel comfortable where we don’t fit. All our life, we’ve been surrounded by points of reference to guide us. Observing the behavior of our peers and the results of those behaviors creates these points of reference. That’s how we acquire the expertise necessary to guide our own behavior.

However, when we are placed in a setting where those points of references no longer exist, we feel uncomfortable and lost as if we were in a strange land. Humans are creatures of habits. We feel comfortable in familiar surroundings but once out of that comfort zone, stress and uncertainty take over. We have a fundamental need to relate to familiar surroundings.

Anyone who was raised in modest financial surroundings will feel more comfortable and “at home” in these surroundings. Strange as it may seem, a substantial increase on the bank account will bring more stress than pleasure. Wearing a crown does not make a king and a fat bank account does not make a person rich. Both of these status are character traits. A king in rags will still be a king and a rich man without money will still be rich.

We have to be, before we can do, before we can have. A wealthy person must feel wealthy before he can be comfortable and at ease in that role. If not, chances are very high that the person will sabotage his success and land exactly where he was before.

Before a person can enjoy the benefits of wealth, an identity change is essential. The reason for that is that so much importance has been attached to money that is has created a false notion of what it is.

Our money is not who we are. The money that we own is simply a resource at our disposal that can be used to acquire objects or to influence our world. By itself, money does not change us or change the way that we feel. Our money is a resource and nothing else. A resource over which we are been given stewardship for an unknown period of time.

A good indicator of our propensity for self-sabotage is the way that we feel in the presence of people of affluence. If we feel right at home we’re OK. On the other hand, a person who would feel intimidated or ill at ease faces a red warning light. That’s a sign that the specter of self-sabotaging looms nearby and is just waiting for any sign of success to gleefully attempt to crush it.

Most of the time, we are our own worst enemy. We seek success and destroy it when it comes. The only possible way of preventing that is by changing the way that we see ourselves.
