Package Before Content
Unless we are first seduced by the package, chances are very high that we won’t buy. That’s true for a car, a bar of soap or a pair of shoes and it’s also true for what you and I have to sell.
To convince, first we must be accepted. If we are turned off by someone, it does not matter how great that person’s message or product is, we’re not going to buy it.
To make a sale or get a point of view accepted, first we must sell ourselves and that can only be done by bonding and connecting with people.
If I resonate with you, we’ll do business. If not, you and I are wasting our time.
How then can I make sure that I will resonate with you? Simple. All that I have to do is to make you feel better about whom you are.
People will forget what you said, they will forget almost everything about the encounter… but they will never forget how you made them feel.
Dale Carnegie said it best when he declared, “When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity.”
You want to make your place in the world? You want to convince people? Start by selling yourself by making the other guy feel a little better about whom he is… and all else will follow.
