The A B C of Emulating
There is nothing new under the sun. Everything that exists in our vast Universe is only an extension of what existed before. The same rule also applies to every one of us. We grow by expanding on what we were before. That’s how it has been since we were born.
Most of our growth is the result of newly acquired knowledge. Something that most everyone knows how to do when it comes to professional and intellectual growth. However, when it comes to growing as individuals and expanding the scope of who we are, the path is not so obvious.
For that kind of self-growth, there is one technique that stands head and shoulders above any others and that is through emulating. Basically, emulating means to imitate. It means adopting someone else’s values, behavior and thinking processes so that they can eventually become our own.
That’s how we’ve been evolving from the moment that we were born and it’s the process that we should consciously pursue if we wish to continue the growing progress in a well-directed and expedient manner.
We formed most of our thinking process by observing and imitating our parents. Most of our fundamental beliefs were adopted in the same fashion. Our demeanor, our way of dressing and expressing ourselves where also adopted my imitating our peers, which is in fact the process of emulation.
Whether we are aware of it or not, up to a point, we are always emulating. In a slow but gradual fashion, we get to adapt and become a bit more every day like the people that surround us.
Now, since the emulating process is already operating in an unconscious way, we may as well use the phenomena in a conscious and directed way to acquire the characteristics that we would like to add to our repertoire.
To do that, the first thing that needs to be done is to find someone who has the characteristics that we would like to acquire. That person has to be someone for which we have some admiration and would like to have as a friend.
Once that this is done, we need to find out as much as possible about that person. Chances are that the person in question will be some sort of a celebrity so, finding some biographies or articles should be relatively easy.
Now that we know about our subject, an imaginary relationship has to be established with that individual. This may seem to be more complex than it actually is. All of our relationships exist in the mind. They were built through a personal response to what we believe the other person to be.
It is a fact that we have opinions and feelings toward personalities that we like or admire. It is also a fact that those feelings can lead to a certain sense of association with these people. Once that sense of association is strong enough a symbiosis becomes established and it is at that point the emulation process takes place.
We tend to become like the people that we associate with and the stronger that association becomes, the faster the metamorphosis takes place. By associating with the: Robbins, Trump, Schwarzenegger, Obama and Branson of this world, slowly but gradually we tend to acquire some of the characteristics that we like about these people and would like to posses.
The Greats of this world became great by emulating others. It worked for them so there is no reason why it should not work for us.
