Wall Street Warrior

If we want to be honest about it, we have to admit that reaching for the higher echelons of personal income is not easy. In fact it could easily be called warfare. I have never heard of anyone making it to the top, or even making it above average, without some serious struggle. Thus the heading of this blog, “Wall Street Warrior.”

The conduct of a career, in whatever field that you are in, could be compared to waging a war. Courageous actions have to be undertaken. Risks are involved. There will be minor and major casualties. There will be setbacks and victories. There will be winners and there will be losers.

Just like the warrior, the career person will have to be trained to fight the battles. That person will have to learn how to exert courage when facing the unknown. Learn how to be flexible in unknown terrains. Learns to adapt and use the available resources at hand. And, above all, be willing to put everything on the line and accept that defeat is not an option. In theory at least.

Does all that seem to be too dramatical? If so, it’s time for a wakeup call. No one has ever made it without ruffling some feathers.

When we read the biographies of successful men and women we see that they were true warriors. They came to the battleground ready to fight for what they believed in. They had a cause, they had a plan, they were determined and they gave it all they had.

Does that imply that they had to be ruthless? On the contrary. The bigger they were the nicer they were. They believed that you can only truly achieve through win/win positions. They understood that life is not a sum zero game. No one has to lose for someone to win.

They saw that true success can only be achieved by creating value for others. That you can only win by building people up and not by tearing them down.

But, make no mistake about it, if you want to succeed anywhere in the marketplace, as a professional, as an artist on in the industry, you must be a fighter, you must be a soldier, a warrior.

In the words of Sun-Tzu from the classic, The Art Of War, “Every battle is won before it is ever fought. If your enemy is superior, evade him. If angry, irritate him. If equally matched, fight, and if not split and reevaluate.”

Strong albeit wise words from Sun-Tzu. These words have withstood the test of times for 2000 years and they are still true today.
